Siamese cats in an ornate frame on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two Siamese cats, one sitting upright and one lying below it, inside a dark grey ornate frame with scrolling edges and a pink gem at the base. Behind them are a teal curtain, a round fishbowl with a goldfish, and a brown wooden dresser. The shading is smooth and the palette is bright, with cream, tan, teal, pink and brown inks.

Mrs Ada Tiller hung the gilt frame so the fishbowl sat directly beneath it, which is why Admiral, the goldfish, believed the two Siamese cats were his personal audience. Every morning Sorrel, the upright one with the startling blue eyes, sat very straight inside the scrollwork and informed her sister Tansy that the fish was common. Tansy lay along the bottom edge with her chin on the carved wood of the dresser and said nothing, because Admiral had just done another lap of the bowl and she was determined to see the end of it.

The trouble began the week the harbour men came up the hill about the damp. A boy in a wet yellow coat leaned a ladder against the wall and lifted the frame off its nail, and for a whole afternoon the cats were carried down the stairs, through the kitchen, and out onto the quay, where gulls the size of spaniels considered them with open suspicion. Sorrel swore she could smell tar, salt and treacle. Tansy only wanted to go home, and said so, loudly, until the boy laughed and tipped the frame to let her see the boats.

They were rehung at dusk, slightly crooked, and the bowl was empty of Admiral. Mrs Tiller had given him to a neighbour's grandson for the week. In his place was a plain, pale goldfish with no name and no opinions. Sorrel looked down at it for a long time. "Common," she said at last, but there was no bite in it, and the new fish turned a slow circle as if it did not mind at all. Tansy closed her eyes and listened to the clock, and for once her sister stayed quiet too.
