It is twenty to five and the oven has only just come up to heat, so forgive the floury thumbprints on this page. You rang again last night about the lease, and I know what you were hoping I would hear. What I am telling you is what I said on Sunday, which is nah. Not no, not never. Just nah, the way your mother said it when you tried to nick an iced bun off the cooling rack.

Dot's old heart-shaped tin is still hanging by the proving cupboard. Every February she piped the lid with sugar flowers in teal and plum and that eye-watering magenta she swore nobody else could carry off, then stood back with her hands on her hips as if she had invented colour. You were nine the year she let you do the leaves. Half of them slid off in the oven, and she kept the best one on the wall for a decade, a green smear pinned under a drawing pin.

So you can take your spreadsheets and your man from the estate agents back to Leeds. I will keep the ovens lit until the flour runs out, and when it does I will bake one last tray of those ridiculous heart loaves for the bin men, who have never once asked me for anything.

The light is coming up grey over the bus station now. I have pulled the first batch, and I have written the word on a slip of brown paper and stuck it to the board, where you will see it on your way past the window on Thursday.
