Small pink ribbon on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small pink ribbon motif sits on the inner wrist of a light-skinned arm. The thin, single-line outline is filled with flat pink ink, with no shading. Around the wrist are a beaded bracelet and a pink wristband with raised lettering, partly reading 'The Breast'.

Now sit down, and I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it to me, with the kettle on and the wind working at the shutters. There was a spool of pink ribbon on the Scarra ferry one winter, the good silk the mill in Kinloch used to make before they shut it. Nobody claimed it. It rolled off the cargo deck in a squall and went over the side, and the sea kept it a long while.

Three weeks later a boy called Iain Mackie found it caught in the kelp below the slipway at low tide. He was seven and had no business on those rocks, but there he was, and he dragged the sodden thing home inside his jumper. His mother dried it on the range. She said it was too fine to be fishing line and too bright to be a rag, so she cut off a length the width of a wrist and told him to tie it on the gate. "Something to show the boats where we are," she said.
And that's where the ribbon went for years. Every spring someone new tied a fresh length to a gate, a post, a coil of rope, and every time they did, a stranger out on the water saw the colour and knew the house was still standing. The spool itself was never found again. Some say the herring wives of the outer isles still have a scrap of it sewn inside their coats, and Iain, grown and grey now, still ties one on his own wrist before he takes the boat out, and he says it's the only thing the sea ever gave him back.
