Pink roses across both shoulders
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
Clusters of pink and red roses with green leaves and a small bud run across the upper chest and both shoulders, with a larger open rose on the right shoulder. The petals use soft, blended shading and defined dark outlines, giving a painterly and realistic look. The ink is mainly pinks, reds and greens on pale skin, and the photo is taken from the chin down.

The last rose on Halse Ridge was blooming the spring the cistern cracked, and Old Morwen said that was the only reason the settlers didn't leave. Nobody had seen a red flower since the Dome went grey, so when the girl Ilse came up the scree with a cutting wrapped in wet cloth, the whole village followed her to the greenhouse to watch her plant it.

The cutting took. Its leaves came in dark green, serrated like the pictures in the old seed catalogue, and by midsummer it had a bud the size of a thumbnail. The village argued about what it wanted. Tomas the pump-keeper said water, and carried buckets up the ridge until his shoulders split. Morwen said it wanted to be left alone, and sat beside it with her knitting, saying nothing for three days.
On the fourth morning the bud had opened into a rose the pink of a fingernail held to the sun, layered and loose at the edges. Beside it two more had come out, and then a spray of smaller ones trailing down the trellis as if someone had spilled a jar of them. Tomas wept, which he denied. Ilse took clippings for the valley below and for the north wall, and by the end of the year no part of Halse failed to smell faintly of something older than the Dome.
Morwen died in the winter with a single bloom on her pillow. They buried her at the foot of the original bush, and the next spring a rose came up from the soil above her with its petals gone deep red at the rim, as though the cold had bruised it and it had decided to keep the colour.
