Pixel art heart and game characters on forearms
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two side-by-side tattoos show pixel art characters in blocky black outlines, each with a small heart above it. The left heart is split into red and black halves, and the right heart is solid red with black outlining. The characters use vivid greens, oranges, blues and reds, with flat colour fills and no shading, set against pale skin.

Wren had been running the same loop of the eastern forest for nine hours when the heart in the corner of the screen cracked down the middle. Half red, half black, the way a dropped sweet splits on pavement. She stopped under a dead oak, looked back along the path toward the blue tower where Maud was supposed to be waiting, and saw only grass tiles repeating like a bad wallpaper pattern.

The cartridge had been built in a hurry in a flat above a chip shop, or so the old shopkeeper in Sunder Village liked to say, and nobody had ever fixed the bug that kept the two of them from sharing a room. Maud could only walk where the map allowed. Wren could only walk where Maud's tower let her out. Between them ran a river with no bridge, and the river was the only thing in the world that had ever stopped Wren from going home.
She tried anyway. She swung her sword at the fence rails until the pixels flickered, and a merchant with a painted grin sold her a red potion for three gold and a promise. It tasted, if a sprite can taste anything, like cold tea. The heart in the corner didn't mend. It only held its breath.
Then, on the ninth hour, the blue tower's door opened on the far bank, and a single figure stepped out onto the water the way a person tests a frozen pond. Maud did not have the spell for that. Nobody had written it. She did it anyway, one stubborn tile at a time, and Wren watched the heart in her own corner fill back in, black outline first and red after, until it was whole and no one could tell where it had broken.
