Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The image shows two small pixel-art figures tattooed side by side on the skin of a forearm. On the left is a trainer character in a red cap and blue top, and on the right is Pikachu in yellow with black outlines and a red cheek. The blocky, stepped edges of the design are shown in a close, straight-on photo against a plain light background.

Dear Mags, the ovens were already roaring when I let myself in at four, and Ruth had left a note on the flour bin saying the Tuesday tins were short again. I'm writing this on the back of a delivery docket because the till roll ran out an hour ago and the light over the proving drawer is the only thing I can see by.

You'll remember the grey handheld Dad left in the drawer under the scales. Last night, on my break, I dug it out and found the batteries still held. The boy in the red cap was standing exactly where he'd been left, stubborn step by stubborn step, and beside him the yellow mouse with the lightning tail was waiting in the long grass as if nobody had ever walked off. I played for twenty minutes with a sausage roll going cold in my hand and didn't once think about the rota.
Then the bell went for the first batch, and I had to put it down. When I came back the screen had dimmed and the mouse had wandered to the edge of the map. I know it's daft, but I felt I'd left the pair of them stranded. I keep thinking about how those little blocks are built, each square doing one job, and how the whole thing only reads as a figure when you stand far enough back from it.
Dawn came up grey over the car park while I was shaping the last of the bloomers. I'm taking the handheld home tonight. I'll wrap the batteries in tape and leave it on your kitchen table so you can see for yourself that the boy and his mouse are still going, step by careful step, toward whatever comes next. Love, Jo.
