Two pixel mushroom wrist tattoos

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two blocky, pixel-style mushroom designs sit side by side on a pair of wrists. Each has a solid black outline, a white stem with a dark base and a cap with a coloured pattern, the left in red and the right in green. The square pixel edges are crisp, and the photograph is taken straight on so both designs sit centrally in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Tulloch had been keeping the Sunnyvale cabinet alive since before the boardwalk lights came on, and by October she knew its moods the way a farmer knows weather. The screen flickered when sea air got into the bezel. The left speaker hissed on wet days. And the little red mushroom, the one that handed out an extra life, only ever bounced onto the screen once a player had lost two lives and was too stubborn to walk away.

Her apprentice, Dev, wanted to replace the board. "It's forty years old," he said, holding a magnifier up like evidence in a murder trial. "There's a lot on eBay from a dead arcade in Leeds."

"Then the next lad wouldn't have a reason to come back," Mags said, and blew dust out of the joystick ports with the bellows she kept for emergencies and birthdays.

On the last Saturday of the season a girl of about eight lost her first two lives, then her third, and when the red cap bounced across the screen she shrieked for her brother. He came running, sulking, and got the hit he needed, and neither of them noticed the green mushroom that appeared a moment later for the second player's slot. Dev noticed. He spent that night with a soldering iron and found the green sprite had been wired to the wrong pin since 1983, which is why it only ever showed up for player two. He left it that way.
