Mario and Peach with "Two Against the World" text
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
Two side-by-side photographs show the same design on the ribs and on the ankle. Cartoon figures of Princess Peach in a pink dress and Mario in a red cap and blue overalls stand beside bold black block lettering that reads TWO AGAINST THE WORLD. The figures are filled with colour and have clean black outlines, while the lettering is solid black on the skin.

The fire door at the back of Pelham Pier's amusements had been propped open with a bag of two pence coins since Tuesday, and the sea wind came through it smelling of chips and diesel. Maureen had been counting the float for twenty minutes when her nephew Kit wheeled the last cabinet out from under the stairs, the one with the cracked marquee and a joystick that stuck to the left.

"Forty quid to the scrapman," he said. "That's the offer."
"Give it here." She knew the cabinet's side panel better than her own kitchen. Someone had painted a small pair of figures there in the eighties, a princess in pink and a plumber in a red cap, and under them, in blocky letters touched up so many times the paint stood proud of the wood: TWO AGAINST THE WORLD. Her Dennis had done it on a Sunday with a tin of enamel and a borrowed brush, because the machine had been the first thing they ever won together, and he had said a pier needed a bit of nerve on its walls.
Kit pressed start. The old tune wheezed out, the little plumber jumped, and the score rolled up to a number nobody had beaten since 1987. Maureen leaned in and read the initials beside it, DM, the same ones tucked in the corner of the paint.
She took the forty pounds out of the drawer, folded it, and put it back. "Leave it plugged in," she said. "Let the tourists have one more go before the lights go out."
