Pixel art wizard hat on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A pixel art wizard hat sits centre frame, with a yellow pointed hat and a blue robe outlined in thick black. The blocky, stepped edges and small yellow dots on the robe give it an 8-bit video game look. The tattoo is shown on smooth skin with the shoulder curve visible at the edge of the frame.

The wizard had been standing on the same blue square of the third level since 1987, and nobody at the Lantern Street arcade had the heart to tell him the game was over. Her nephew Tomasz thought it was nonsense. He thumbed the buttons like a boy beating a drum, and the wizard only jiggled left and right without ever moving on. "He's broken, Aunt Dilys. Bin him." She took the back panel off with the screwdriver her late husband had kept in his cardigan pocket and angled the torch over the circuit board. Behind the green wires, somebody had scratched tiny marks into the resin: a row of short strokes, four bars and a line through, one for every night the arcade had closed early.
There were a great many of them. Dilys counted until the torch dimmed, and then she understood that the wizard had not been stuck at all. He had been keeping the count for someone who never came back to finish the quest, and he was too polite to give up on the last square. She sat on the stool with the panel in her lap for a long time.
On Friday she brought a fine-tipped pen from the till drawer, found a clean corner of the board and made one more mark. When she pressed Start, the wizard stepped forward onto the green path, and the speakers gave a small, bright chime that Tomasz swore he had never heard before.
