Pizza, avocado, pineapple and coffee cup tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A four-panel collage of small food-themed tattoos in black ink. Two matching pizza slices sit on the tops of two feet, an avocado outline with a shaded half is on the inner forearm, a tiny pineapple is on a finger held in a peace sign, and a small coffee cup is on the wrist beside a white mug. The linework is thin and simple, with minimal shading and a neutral backdrop in each panel.

The lock at Stenning Cut had stuck since the spring floods, and Bet Coram had sat on the wet balance beam for an hour, waiting for Osric Hale to stop pretending he could not hear her. Her narrowboat, the Patience, sat behind the gates with a hold full of crated avocados gone soft in the heat. Every ripe one she could not sell would be mush by Thursday, and the crew knew it, and so did the gulls.

Osric came down at last with his cap pushed back and his hands in his coat. He would work the gates, he said, for a cup of coffee boiled the way his late wife had boiled it, in a dented pan with the grounds left to settle. Bet had only a tin of grounds for the crew and a white mug with a chip in the rim. She made it on the little stove while the wind combed the reeds flat, and she poured it with the same care she gave a loaded tiller.

He drank it slowly, then cut one avocado in half on the railing with his pocketknife. He turned the green flesh up to the light, looked at the stone in its middle for a long while, and laughed like a gate hinge. Pass me the other half, he said, and I will tell you a thing about this cut that your father never told you. Bet passed it over. The gates groaned, the water rose into the chamber, and the Patience slid through with its cargo ripening in the sun. The mug stayed on the railing, rain running down its chipped rim, and it was the only thing on the bank still warm when the boat cleared the far gate.
