Small grid ball tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held up in a peace sign against a dark grey backdrop. A very small tattoo sits on the side of the middle finger near its base, showing a round, grid-patterned ball with a small flame or crown shape on top. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, and the composition is centred on the hand and the tattoo.

The lift in Tallis House had been broken since Easter, so the whole fourteenth floor took the stairs with their shopping and their opinions. Nobody had asked for a party. Dimitri from flat 61 turned up one Saturday with a carrier bag of tinfoil and a mirrored ball he'd lifted from a charity shop window, saying it was a crime to waste a roof like ours.

We hauled it up the stairwell in pieces. The ball was the size of a grapefruit, all little silver squares, and it wouldn't sit on the aerial mast until Priya tied it on with her netball laces. Dimitri wanted a sparkler on top, a fizzing crown, so the thing would look lit from inside. Mrs Okafor from flat 58 handed over the matches she kept for her gas hob and told him not to be a fool, then stood back and watched him strike one anyway.

The sparkler spat twice and gave up. Everyone groaned. Dimitri swore in Greek and went hunting for his lighter, and that was when the sun slid round the corner of the block and caught the squares. A grid of light spilled across the car park, over the bins, up the brick face of our own building, and onto the windows of the lift engineer's van below, where he was eating a sandwich and looked up like someone had flicked on a switch in his head.

Fourteen floors of people came to their windows to see what we had done. For once, nobody had to take the stairs to see it.
