Neo-traditional colour tattoo of a heart-shaped planchette with a moon, a bat and the word GOOD BYE, surrounded by purple clouds and sparkles, with a hand resting on it, on the lower leg.

Planchette with bat and clouds on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A heart-shaped planchette sits at the centre, showing a pale moon, a grey bat and the word GOOD BYE in bold outlined lettering. Purple clouds with sparkles surround it, a pale hand with red-tipped fingers rests on its lower edge, and a teal wash sits behind the design. Bold black outlines, flat colour and soft shading on the planchette give it a neo-traditional look on the lower leg, photographed straight on.

Dear Mother Agnes,

I write before the bell because I cannot sleep, and because you asked me to report anything strange in the still-room. The board is not a board at all. Brother Edwin found it under the flagstones when they lifted them for the drain: a heart of grey wood with a little brass foot, and a moon painted on it so pale the friars took it for a communion wafer. Father Cuthbert said it should be burned. I said it should be kept in the reliquary cupboard where nobody would be tempted, and I have been the one tempted.

Last night I set two fingers on it and asked, out of plain foolishness, whether the bat that lives in the bell tower had a name. The foot went slowly to the left, then to the right, then spelt G, O, O, D. I laughed. I thought Edwin had weighted it. Then it spelt B, Y, E, and stopped, and the candle we had lit for the vigil went out with a sound like a page turning.

Edwin swears the bat was not there when he lifted the stone. I have checked the tower. Nothing hangs there now but the old bell rope and a little purple dust, the colour of the lavender we dry in the cloister. I am sending the planchette back in the tin with this letter. Please do not let anyone put their hand on it. I would sooner it went to the river than was asked a question twice.
