Planet, sun and stars on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo on the inner wrist shows a ringed planet, a sun with radiating rays and a scatter of single dots suggesting stars. The linework is thin and black, with no shading, and the dots are spaced loosely around the two main motifs. The image is in colour, with a pale hand against a white surface and succulent plants blurred in the background.

Dear Tom,

The harbour master says the rings are showing again over the breakwater, though Mum insists it's only Saturn and you'd do better looking at the tide tables. I took the old telescope up to the chapel steps last night and sat with the eyepiece going cold against my cheek until the planet came clear, a pale knot with its ring tipped like a hat brim. I counted the stars around it, the loose ones nobody bothers with, and got to forty before the wind turned and the gulls started.
Mr Pascoe at the chandlery now charges a penny a look through his telescope, since the tourists started coming, so I do his stock sheets in exchange. He keeps a brass sundial in the window, and every morning I stand beside it and call the time before it can. He thinks I'm showing off. I'm not. The sun here climbs over the slipway as if someone has sent for it, and I want somebody to know I noticed.
Dad's boat is still tied at the far end, the one you painted the name off. I've started a new name for it in chalk on the sea wall, so when you come home you'll see it first. It's the dots I keep thinking about. Every star I counted has a boat's name in my head, so you're out there somewhere among them, and I won't say which one until you're back to tell me I got it wrong.
Write soon. Mum says the kettle's yours when you're in.
Love, Nell
