Planetary and moon symbols down a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A line of small planetary and crescent moon symbols runs diagonally down the outside of a lower leg, from near the knee towards the ankle. Each symbol is outlined in a different bright ink, including orange, blue, red, green and pink, with crisp, even linework. The pale tiled floor and bare foot with dark toenail polish sit around the leg, and the close, straight-on framing keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

"The Moon goes first," Dad said, "because it's the nearest, and it's the one that gets in everyone's way." He was up the second ladder at the Bramley end, tying the last of the late plums into crates with string, and I was at the bottom passing him up the tallies. We had been picking since six. By eleven the wasps had found the windfalls and the air smelled of vinegar and cut grass.

He had painted the signs on the crate ends himself, years back, each in a different colour from the same tin of old tractor enamel: orange for the Moon, blue for Mercury, red for Mars, green for Jupiter. He never explained the colours. He said you learned the order by heart or you didn't learn it at all, and then you were just a man standing under a tree.

The sale was Friday. The buyer from Maidstone had already offered for the whole block, and Dad had said yes before I could get my coat off the hook. I would be in a flat in Leeds by October, learning to sit still in an office. I told him I would come back for the Perseids, and he said the meteors only came when the orchard wanted them to, and I should stop talking nonsense and hand him the next crate.

Last thing that night he stood on the top rung with the torch switched off and pointed at the sky, not at the fruit. "Moon," he said, and the crescent came up over the hedge, thin and orange as a peel. I wrote it on the last crate in biro so I would not forget the order.
