Three small coloured hearts on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of the inside of a wrist showing three small solid hearts in a row, running from the thumb side towards the hand. The hearts are filled with flat colour in purple, pink and teal, with no visible outlines or shading. The dark background makes the small colour blocks stand out, and the hand's fingers with pink nail polish appear at the top right of the frame.

Sit nearer the range, you lot, and mind the dog's tail. Frost on the top field again, and the ewes are heavy with it. Now, I'll tell you about Mother Eskdale, who kept the flock on the north side of Hollin Fell when your grandfathers were still in short trousers.

She had three dyes in a stone jar: violet boiled from bilberries, rose from madder root, and a teal she scraped from the lichen on the old sheepfold wall. Every spring she dipped a skein of wool in each and tied a little heart of it to a ewe's ear, so the lambs could be told apart in the snow. Three ewes, three hearts, and nobody ever went short of a lamb.

Then came the winter the beck froze to the bottom and the fox got into the lower pen. Mother Eskdale was up three nights running, lantern in one hand and the jar in the other, counting breath into the cold. On the third night she found only two hearts in the snow, the violet and the rose. The teal had gone with the ewe into the drift, and the ewe was found by the lambing gate come March, alive and bleating, the teal wool still knotted to her ear.

So she never let anyone cut it off. And that, my dears, is why every ewe on Hollin Fell is marked with three colours, though the shepherds now use plastic tags and tell you it's for the ledger. Off to bed with you. The lantern stays lit till the last of you is asleep.
