Planets in a row along a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot shows a row of small planets tattooed in a curved line from near the ankle towards the toes. The circles vary in size, and one of the larger planets has a ring around it, with the smallest dots sitting nearest the toes. The linework is thin and black, with no shading or colour, against a plain grey concrete background.

The orrery was the last thing Dunmore would sell, and he sold it on a Tuesday in late October, when the big top had already come down in sections and the field outside Spalding smelled of wet sawdust and diesel. You had been up since five with a pot of black ink and a rag, because the brass Saturn had lost its paint and the scrapyard man wanted it clean enough to look like it still meant something.

Dunmore watched you work from the step of his caravan, a cigarette burning down unnoticed between his fingers. "Nobody pays for the planets, love," he said. "They pay for the lights." You told him the lights had been dead since August. He laughed, then coughed, then said the boy who ran the generator had taken the bulbs for his mother's shed. You kept at the ring, a thin black curve drawn freehand the way your father taught you to letter shop windows: once, without lifting the pen.

By dusk the sphere sat on its cart looking almost new, and the lorry was idling by the gate with its headlamps on. Dunmore pressed an envelope into your hand, and you counted it twice under the cab light. Then you walked out past the empty patch where the elephant had stood, and in the mud by the water tap you found the chalk the children had left that summer, a wobbly line of circles running from the gate, each one smaller than the last.

You crouched and filled in the nearest one, the smallest, the one closest to the tap, and sat back on your heels to look at it. The driver leaned out and asked what you were doing. You said you were leaving a map for whoever came next, and he shrugged, slammed the door, and drove off towards the road with the sun going down behind him.
