Playing card suit tattoos on four fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand rests on a dark surface against a blurred, colourful background, with pink nail varnish on each fingertip. Four small solid icons sit on the fingers: a black spade, a red-orange diamond, a black club and a red heart. The icons are simple filled shapes with clean edges, and the composition centres on the knuckles and fingers.

The deck had been in the bilge of the Gannet since February, and every card came up swollen at the corners, so Tom Ruddock dried each one on his jumper before he dealt. Gulls worked the quay behind him. Across the upturned crate that served as a table, his aunt Viv sorted her hand by touch, not sight, the way she had sorted everything since her eyes clouded over the winter before.

The stake was the mooring. Eleven years of berth fees sat in a jam jar between them, and Viv had never once let him take a hand he had not earned. He laid down a run of diamonds, then a third, and she answered with a club, then a spade. The harbour bell clanked twice in the wind while she held her last card face down for so long that a fishmonger's boy stopped to watch from the steps.
When she finally turned it over it was the heart, bright as a shop sign, and it was the only card on the crate that had dried stiff and flat without a single crease. Tom looked at it, then at the others, then at the wet ring of tea on the planks where the jam jar had stood. Viv smiled without showing her teeth. She had swapped the decks on Sunday, she said, and let him believe his luck had come back. He pushed the mooring key across the crate to her, and she dropped it into her coat pocket without a word, and the tide turned under the quay as if it had been waiting on them both.
