Playing card suit tattoos across four fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A clenched hand is shown from the front, with one small tattoo on each of the four fingers. From left to right they are a black spade, a red heart, a black club and a red diamond, each a simple solid icon. The background is dark clothing on the left and a brown leather chair and pale floor on the right, and the image is well lit with the hand in sharp focus.

Fenwick dealt the last hand just after three, when the gas had turned blue and the landlady had stopped pretending she wasn't listening at the hatch. Four players were left at the table in the back room of the Crown on Wharf Street. Coppers, a cracked saucer of shillings and a tin of Woodbines sat on the oilcloth between them, and nobody had mentioned the time since midnight.

Ada Pym had not lost a hand since the spring. She sat with her back to the window and her cards held close, while Tobias Crane, who owed half the street and had been drinking his brother's money, pushed his dead father's pocket watch into the middle of the table. "Covers the lot," he said. Ada looked at the watch for a long moment, then at her cards. Her hand came to her in suits she had never liked: a spade for the coal she hauled as a girl, a heart for her mother's cough, a club for the loom, a diamond for the price of bread.
She did not reach for the watch. She laid her cards down one by one, and Crane's face slackened with each fall. When he turned his last card over it was the two of clubs, and the room went quiet. Ada gathered the pot without hurry and slid the watch back across the oilcloth, its face still ticking. "Take it home," she said. "Wind it. Time you were the one keeping it."
The landlady drew the hatch shut, and the gas went on burning.
