Small outline heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held up with two fingers extended shows a small, single-line outline of a heart on the side of the middle finger. The linework is thin and dark, with a simple, slightly uneven hand-drawn quality. The image is in natural colour against a plain white background, with the hand filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Cox trees at Hallow Farm were ready a fortnight early that year, and Dad said it was the dry August that did it, though I think he was just tired of being right about the weather. I was nineteen and had come back to pick because the money beat the bar in Ledbury, and because my sister had married a beekeeper and I could not face another Sunday lunch under her eye.

Pickers worked in pairs down the rows, and mine was Ruth Okonedo, who was sixty and had picked at Hallow since before my father took the lease. She kept a biro in her apron pocket and used it on the crates, ticking off each full one with a neat stroke. In the second week she drew a heart on the lid of a windfall crate, a wobbly outline with the loop at the top never quite closing. I asked what it was for. She said somebody had to keep count of the things they liked, not only the bushels.

The rain came on the Thursday and the ladders got slick, and I fell badly enough to sit in the mud under a Bramley and laugh until I cried. Ruth didn't fuss. She sat down beside me, took the biro out, and drew a small heart on the back of my hand while I was still wiping my face. It hurt my pride more than my hip.

On the last afternoon the lorry backed up to the barn and the crates went up in a line. I took the biro from Ruth's pocket and drew one more heart on the final crate, pressing too hard so the line came out crooked. When the lorry pulled away it was bound for the press at Much Marcle, and I thought of the cider going into barrels with that little drawn heart somewhere in the stack.
