Matching conversation heart wrist tattoos
Other · Mixed · Photo
Two small heart shapes sit side by side on the inner wrists, styled like sweet conversation hearts with a raised lower edge. The purple heart on the left reads FIGHT EVIL and the pink heart on the right reads WIN LOVE, both in black capital lettering. The soft shading and dark outlines are simple and clean, and the photo is taken straight on against a dark leather surface.

By the third week of October the conversation hearts at Pelham's had gone soft at the corners, and Edith Lund was fairly sure they were gossiping. The lilac one and the pink one sat side by side in the penny jar behind the barley sugar, and every morning when she lifted the lid they had drifted a little closer together, as if the glass had tilted in the night.

The trouble started with Walter Dacey, who had stamped the sayings onto the sweets for thirty years on a machine that grumbled like a tram. He ran short of black ink in the spring and finished the batch with whatever was left, so the lilac hearts came out reading FIGHT EVIL and the pink ones WIN LOVE. Edith had meant to send them back. Instead she put them on the counter with a handwritten card that said Ask for the pair, and for a month nobody asked.
On the Saturday before Bonfire Night two girls came in out of the rain, one with a drowned umbrella under her arm, and stood at the counter arguing about whether anyone still ate sweets with words on them. Edith said nothing. She weighed out the pink and the lilac on the brass scales, one each, and wrapped them in a twist of white paper.
"Which one's mine?" the taller girl asked. "Both of them," said the other, and pressed the pink heart into her friend's palm while keeping the lilac for herself. Edith watched the bell swing above the door long after they had gone, and she thought the jar would seem a good deal emptier now, and that the hearts, for once, had been right about the order of things.
