Sit close, the fire's low and this one's older than your mam. The winter the water came into Hollins Drift, Dai Penrose came up the shaft with his hands curled like rakes, and nobody in the valley could prise them straight. The doctor from Merthyr said it was the cold. The chapel women said it was the pit keeping a hold of him.

What the pit wanted from Dai was not his fingers. It was the picture book he carried in his coat for his girl, Nia, who was seven and could not read yet. The book had princesses in it, each with hair like spilt treacle and a crown on her head, and every night Dai told Nia their names before she slept. When the water took the coat, he took the faces back the only way a collier could, by drawing them on himself with a sharpened nail and lamp-black, one to a finger, so he would never lose them again.

Nia came to the house that spring with a bruise on her knee and found him at the table with his hands spread flat. She counted them with him, thumb to little finger, the way children count sheep. She knew every face but one, the one on his thumb with the crown gone soft at the edges. Dai said that princess had been torn out of the book when the page went, and had gone to live in the thumb because it was the biggest and could hold her.

Nia grew up and taught her own children to count the faces. Every night she still starts with the thumb and says the name out loud, so the princess knows she is still wanted.
