A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The eight princesses came into the silversmith's shop on the Tuesday before Michaelmas, and each one wanted her face on a ring before the others got theirs. Ada, left minding the bench while her uncle drank at the Crown, had a sharp pencil and less patience. She drew them on the back of a tally book: Rosamund with her chin up, Elspeth with her plait over one shoulder, and Idony, who said nothing and looked at the window the whole time.

They haggled. Rosamund wanted garnets, Elspeth wanted the silver polished until she could see her eyebrows in it, and the youngest, Clemence, wanted to know whether a face could be drawn so small that a prince would have to hold it to a candle to find her. Ada said yes, and said it would cost a shilling more. By dusk she had cut eight bands thin as cat whiskers and engraved each face with a needle, shading the hair in short strokes so the lines would not fill with grime.

The princesses paid in the end, and each took her ring, slid it onto a finger, and went off up the lane to find whichever prince would have her. Ada waited at the window for word. Nobody came back. On Michaelmas morning the tally book lay open on the bench with one face still unfinished, Idony's, the one who had looked at the window. Ada finished it before noon, put it on her own little finger, and went out to sell pies.
