Profile outline and red rose on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a thin black outline of a face in profile, with a hand-like shape curving beneath it, and a small red rose with a drop of red at its stem. The linework is fine and mostly unshaded, with the rose as the only colour. The wrist is photographed from above on a tiled floor, with a small dog at the left edge of the frame.

Every ninth cycle she sat with Tomas Eyre in the observation ring and drew him. He had no patience for stillness, so she worked from memory and from the crease of his jaw when he turned toward the viewport. Her pencil moved in long unbroken lines, the way the old drafting manuals taught, never lifting until the outline closed. Beneath his chin she sketched a hand cupping him, the way she had cupped his face the night the seal failed on deck four and the air came back in a rush that tasted of metal.
He laughed when she showed him the sheet. "You've made me look like I'm listening for something far off."
"You are. The pumps, always." He asked for the rose, so she mixed the last of the bay's red dye with a little water and painted one bloom at the edge of the page, then a single drop below its stem, where a thorn had caught her glove the week before.
When the reactor was shut down in the year the ship finally reached dock, the station went dark for a week. Mara carried the drawing down the ramp in the dim, and in all that grey, the rose was the only thing she could still make out.
