Profile woman with flowers and Sweetheart banner

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman's head in right-facing profile wears a pale blue headband and a cluster of pink, blue and orange flowers in her hair, with a red and blue drop earring and a string of pearls at her neck. A red banner lettered SWEETHEART and a black heart with a red centre sit at the lower left, outlined in heavy black lines. Bold colour fills, red blush and soft shading dominate, set against a plain grey background on the upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The blast had taken the banner clean off the tug's flank, so Ottilie Varga spent the first shift of the new cycle mixing reds on the floor of the Halvard Wheel dock, using a cup of cold coffee as her palette. The old lettering had been painted by a man named Sol Brannigan, who had since drifted out to the Kepler mines and taken his stencils with him. Ottilie had only a photograph printed on paper gone soft as cloth, and a memory of the lines.

Her crew watched from the airlock. Dmitri, who flew the tug like it owed him money, said the woman on the nose looked like a tax clerk now that a rock the size of a cargo pod had scraped her hair flat. Ottilie told him to hold the lamp steady. She redrew the headband first, the pale blue lace with its little hearts, then the pink and orange flowers coming out of the curls, because the flowers were the part people at the docks always asked about. A fishing drone from the outer belt once tried to dock with the tug out of sheer admiration.

By the third day the banner was back, red and curling, the word SWEETHEART running over the hull seam where the weld had cracked. Ottilie added the black heart last, outlining it thick enough to read from the observation deck. Dmitri came down with a wrench and stood under the nose for a long time without speaking.

"She's uglier than before," he said at last. "Worse hair." Ottilie wiped her brush on her overalls. "She's still here," she said, and climbed down the ladder to fetch the next colour.
