Purple crystal cluster on an ankle

Dotwork · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A cluster of tall, faceted crystals in shades of purple, pink and blue rises from a bed of small black dots. The crystals have dark outlines and simple highlight lines that suggest their facets, with soft colour blends across each point. The design sits on the ankle and is shown against a wooden floor.

My brother Dan found it in a Derbyshire quarry the summer before he met Priya. It was a grey lump you would kick aside without a second look. He split it open on the back step with a borrowed club hammer and a chisel that never went back to its owner. Inside, packed tight as a crowd at closing time, were tall points of violet and rose, each one faceted as if someone had taken real care over it. Dan always said the outside was only the wrapping.

Halfway through the first dance, the sun dropped low enough to come through the old glass and set the crystals glowing. The fine black grit that had dusted the cracks, the bit nobody bothered to brush away, scattered across the sill like spilt pepper, and for a minute the whole room seemed to be standing on a shore of sparks. Priya's grandmother got up without a word and went over to look. Nobody else moved.

Later, when the chairs were stacked and the urn was cooling, Maureen tried to hand the stone to me for the car boot. I shook my head. Some things are meant to be looked at where the light lands, and that wedding had waited all year for the window to line up.
