Puzzle piece with red heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a puzzle piece outlined in dark ink sits on the back of an ankle, with a solid red heart filling its centre. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the red is the only colour against the skin tone. The tattoo is centred in the frame against a wooden floor.

Every puzzle that left my trestle table at Hollins Green fair came back a piece short, and by the third Sunday in August I had a shoebox of orphans under the counter. Dad blamed the cardboard. Mum blamed the wind that got under the awning. I blamed the children, who were quick, and the teenagers, who were quicker.

Then a girl of about nine set a pier puzzle down on my table like a summons, a thousand pieces of Brighton-blue sea and a striped pavilion. "One's missing," she said. "The one with the heart." I tipped the shoebox out, and there it was: a single piece with a dark outline and a small red heart printed in its middle, the only red in the whole sea. She pressed it into the gap beside the pavilion's flag and went very still, the way people do when something they have been carrying around in their head finally has edges.
She wouldn't take a refund and I didn't offer one. Her nan had bought the puzzle for her birthday in June, she said, and had always pointed to the heart first, saying it was where the sea kept its warm bits. Her nan wasn't at the fair any more, and the girl had walked the whole field twice looking for a stall that might sell the same box again.
I packed the shoebox away that evening and found I had nothing left to blame. The lamp at the end of the pier had been dark in every picture I had ever sold. Now, with the heart in place, it looked as if someone had just switched it on.
