Heart and paw print on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is drawn in thin black linework, with a solid paw print sitting in its upper curve. The tattoo sits on the top of a light-skinned foot, with the toes and a leather-look surface visible behind it. The ink is black only, and the simple centred composition keeps the small design clear.

Dear Marnie, I know you still think I cheated at the Year Nine raffle, so let me say it plainly before the reunion makes us both pretend otherwise. I am bringing Biscuit. Not the dog, who died the winter after you moved to Leeds, but his lead, which I have carried in my coat pocket for eleven years like a stone I keep forgetting to throw.

Mum never let us have a dog. She said a house with four children and a grandmother was no place for a thing that needed walking. So Biscuit was a scruffy brown stray with one white ear who followed me home from the bus stop after the Whitby trip, and I hid him in the airing cupboard for three days before she found out. You remember the smell of wet fur and Parma violets, I know you do.
Here is what I need you to do at the reunion. Find Mr Pearce, the caretaker, the one who kept a biscuit tin in the boiler room, and ask whether the mark we drew on the back wall of the science block in 1998 is still under the paint. I told everyone it was a dog. It was a heart with a paw print in its top curve, done in biro, because you said a plain heart was too soppy and a paw on its own was too babyish, and together they were just right.
If the wall has been painted over, bring a biro and we will draw it again on the bench by the car park, and then you can tell me I am being soft. Love, Jen. P.S. Biscuit's lead is in the envelope. Don't lose it.
