Black dotwork and fine line pyramid above the words 'the world is a wonderfully weird place' in typewriter-style text, tattooed on the inner forearm.

Pyramid and quote on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a outlined pyramid drawn in fine black linework with horizontal and vertical lines across its faces. Below it, stippled dots fade out downwards, and the phrase 'the world is a wonderfully weird place' sits underneath in a typewriter-style font. The ink is solid black, and the design is centred on the forearm against plain skin.

Below, in the cabin, her father's typewriter sat where he had left it the winter before his chest gave out, its E gone soft and its carriage stiff with damp. Every manifest he ever signed had carried the same line at the foot of the form, where the customs men never bothered to read: the world is a wonderfully weird place. He had copied it from a card in a Margate arcade and never once explained himself.

She rolled a sheet into the platen and typed the cargo: four tons of river sand, Erith to Brentford, consignee unknown. The E stuck, then gave. She sat a while with her hands on the keys, listening to the water knock against the hull, and then she typed the line herself, slowly, letter by letter, the way he had taught her.

At Brentford the wharfinger signed without looking up, then glanced at the bottom of the sheet and laughed, a short bark that sent a pigeon off the crane. "Your dad's, is it? Nobody's typed that since the nineties." Ruth looked back down the cut. The hold was swept clean, but a faint grey line of sand still lay along the gunwale where the wind had pushed it, like something being kept.
