All the world's a stage script on the hip

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a single line of cursive script reading All the world's a stage, tattooed on pale skin. The letters have smooth, even linework with some shading in the thicker strokes, and the text runs horizontally across the frame. Black lace fabric sits at the top edge of the image, and the background is a soft, neutral grey.

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Ludlow on Tuesday and the lion has taken to sulking in his crate. We played the Corn Exchange to nine people and a dog, and Mr Pardoe read the seven ages in his dressing gown because his trunk went on to Hereford without him.

You asked me at Christmas why I still chase the fairs when the proper halls pay better and nobody's cart loses a wheel on the hill out of Leominster. I never gave you a proper answer. Here it is: the back board of our stage is painted in gold leaf and a looping hand, the sign-writer's flourishes curling round the words ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, and Gideon scraped the letters off an old hansom cab years ago so we'd have something to hang in the rain. The paint has flaked on the W, but the rest holds.

Last night a child slipped under the rope during the final scene and walked onto the boards with a toffee apple, and nobody moved to fetch her. Pardoe simply stepped aside, bowed to her, and said the line again, slower, so the whole field turned to look at him. The organ on the carousel next door started up, and for a minute no one needed the rest of the play.

Come and see us in Shrewsbury on the twelfth. Bring the good coat and the boots you wore at Mother's. There's a spare bed in the caravan, and I'll tell you everything the lion did.

Your brother, Tom
