Quote and botanical forearm tattoo
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A rectangular framed box with the words everything carries me to you in a serif typeface sits across the centre of the forearm. Leaves, a sprig of foliage and a five-petal flower with a small centre surround the box, drawn in fine black linework with light shading. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, and the composition runs diagonally down the arm against a dark wooden background.

Ines had left the bread card on the hook above the proving racks, the one with the recipe in her narrow capitals, and Mira read it again while the first tray hissed in the deck oven. Four hours before light, the bakery smelled of scorched sugar and wet stone. Nobody else was up in Clewes Lane except the milk float, and its rattle came and went like a slow argument.

She shaped the rye the way Ines had shown her, folding the dough over itself until the surface went taut as a drum. Under the window the rosemary had been nipped back by frost, and the sprigs Ines had pinned to the noticeboard in October were still there, dry and grey, pressed flat beneath a sheet of cellophane.
On the bottom of the card, under the method, her sister had written a line that was not a recipe. Everything carries me to you. Mira had laughed the first time she saw it, thinking it was a joke about flour sacks and delivery vans. Now she carried the loaves out on the wooden peel, one by one, through the warm dark to the cooling rack, and understood that Ines had meant the bread, the early train, the tins of tea posted north every Friday.
The last loaf came out at ten to six, split along its top in a neat ear. Mira set it down, tapped the crust, and listened to it crackle as it cooled. Then she picked up her phone and typed the first words she could think of: the bread is out.
