Quote and Mickey Mouse silhouette on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a block of black script and serif lettering across the upper back, reading Laughter is timeless, Imagination has no age and Dreams are forever, with a solid black Mickey Mouse head silhouette beside the last two lines. The letters use smooth, bold strokes with some shading, and the ink is uniformly black with no colour. The close, slightly angled framing fills the frame with skin and the lettering, with a dark garment visible at the top edge.

The lift in Harrow Court has been broken since Easter, so you climb the nine flights with a carrier bag of tins that knocks against your knee at every landing. On the fifth floor, under a strip light that hums like a fridge, Dev Okafor sits on the step with a biro and the back of a council letter, drawing something with two round ears. He does not look up. "It's for you," he says. "You said the lift was a joke."

You sit down beside him, careful of the tins. The mouse is lopsided, one ear bigger than the other, and above it he has written LAUGHTER IS TIMELESS in capitals that climb uphill. Below, IMAGINATION HAS NO AGE, and then, squeezed in at the bottom, DREAMS ARE FOREVER. You tell him the spelling is fine. He says his teacher reckons dreams last only if you write them down, and you say that sounds like the kind of thing teachers say to keep a class sitting still. He laughs so hard he drops the biro down the stairwell, and you both listen to it bounce all the way to the bins.
That night you read the council letter properly for the first time. Harrow Court is to be cleared in two years. You don't tell Dev. Instead you tape his drawing to the inside of your front door, where the landing light slips under the gap, so you will see it every time you leave. Before you go down to work, you read the last line aloud to the empty hallway, then take the stairs, one step at a time.
