Walt Disney quote tattoo on the upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a black ink tattoo of a quotation set in a serif typeface, reading "Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever", with the attribution "Walt Disney" written beneath in a looping script. The lines are crisp and solid with no visible shading, and the lettering is set on a slight diagonal across the skin near the collarbone. The image is black and white, with the hair and shoulder softly out of focus at the edges.

Dear Nell, we are three weeks out from Valparaíso and the sea has gone the colour of wet slate every morning since. Cook swears it is the wind that does it, but I think nobody has told the water it is meant to be blue.

Yesterday young Tobias, the purser's boy, came up to the forecastle with a scrap of card he had found tucked in a sea chest in the lazarette. Someone had written a line on it in careful copperplate: "Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever." Underneath was a name I did not recognise, and a little flourish that looked like a gull in flight. He wanted to know if it was true. I said a thing written on card is not the same as a thing proven at sea, which made him frown so hard his freckles bunched, so I told him it was true for the length of a watch. He was satisfied with that and went off to tell the mizzen watch.
That night we had a flat calm, the first in a fortnight, and the whole crew sat out on the hatch covers while Tobias balanced a tin cup on the end of a boathook and made the bosun laugh until he coughed. Nobody mentioned the card again. The stars came out thick as spilt flour and nobody thought to be tired.
I have kept the card in my oilskin pocket. When we are home I will hand it to you, and you can tell me whether the man was right, and I will tell you whether a boy of eleven can make a calm sea feel like a fair wind. Mind the lamp in the back kitchen, and give the cat my love.
