Nell Ashby came to the harvest dance at Little Wenning in her mother's green shoes, which were two sizes too large and packed with paper at the toes. She danced with the miller's sons, the curate and an old man who counted the steps aloud. None of them mattered. The fiddler was poor, the hall smelled of wet straw, and she meant to walk home before the moon cleared the church tower.

Then a tall man in a grey coat stood by the door and did not come forward. He only watched her turn. Nell thought him proud and said so to the girl beside her, who laughed and said he had been waiting all evening for Nell to look up.

He asked for the last dance, and the fiddler struck up a slow tune nobody had requested. They went around the boards once, then twice, and on the third turn the lamps guttered and everyone cheered at the dark. In that dark he said her name slowly, the way a man reads a letter to be sure of the spelling. "And suddenly you were my everything," he said, and Nell could not tell whether he meant it or was only tired of standing still.

When the lamps were lit again the grey coat was gone from the door. At dawn Nell found it folded on the hall step, with a pair of green shoes set beside it, and tucked into one sleeve was a card with a single line in a loose hand. It asked her to save him the next dance.
