Quote lettering with red bow tie on upper back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo is a line of lettering in mixed serif and script styles, with the phrase 'We're all stories in the end' above 'Just make it a good one eh?' and a shaded red bow tie beneath. The large word 'Stories' is filled with teal and blue shading, while the smaller text is in dark grey and black with clean outlines. It sits across the upper back and shoulder blade, photographed close up with the words filling most of the frame.

The wind has got under the portcullis again, and you are halfway up the keep stairs with a torch that is almost out when the stranger in the red bow tie calls down to you from the broken battlements. He is sitting on a fallen merlon with his boots dangling over a forty-foot drop, eating a pear as if he has all night. 'You're late,' he says. 'Everyone is late to their own ending. It's the one thing they never plan for.'

You ask him what he means. He tells you the castle was built by a baker's daughter who wanted a tower tall enough to watch her ships come home. The ships never came, so she filled the keep with books instead, and the books are still here, swollen and stacked to the rafters in the chapel. Every one has a last page with no ink on it. 'Stories end,' he says, 'but nobody writes the last line until someone is standing over them with a pen and a bad cold.'
You find the chapel. The pages have drunk the rain and your fingers leave prints in the pulp. Near the altar lies a ledger with your name on its spine, though you have never written a word of it. The first leaf is blank, and beside it, in faded brown ink, someone has scratched: just make it a good one, eh?
When you climb back up, the battlement is empty except for the pear core balanced on the stone and a single red bow tie folded into the shape of a question mark. You pick up the pen. The wind drops. Far below, the sea has finally come in, and for the first time in years the tower can see it.
