Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a torso with a black ink quote set in a typewriter-style serif font across five lines on the ribs. The lettering is crisp and solid with no shading, and the text is set against smooth pale skin. A hand with rings and dark nail varnish holds up the dark top at the upper edge of the frame, and the background is an indoor room.

On Hallan the post boat came only on Tuesdays, and Morag Dunn kept the one typewriter on the island in the back room of the shop. Every Tuesday somebody brought her a page to be typed fair: a bill, a letter for the mainland, a notice for the church door. She charged a penny and never read what she was copying.

The winter the herring failed, old Ewan Corrie came in with a sheet of lined paper folded into four. His hands shook too badly to strike the keys himself, so he sat on the wooden stool by the stove and told her what to type. It was one line, he said, and he would pay her twice. She rolled the sheet into the carriage and set the letters down slowly: There will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.

He asked her to do it again because the comma had come out crooked. Then again, because the T in tears had a smudge. She did it three times, and each time he held the page up to the window and looked at it as if it were a boat coming in. Morag asked him whose words they were. Ishbel's, he said. She had written them from the mainland hospital in her last letter, in pencil, and the pencil had faded to nothing in his coat pocket.

In April the first boat came over the water with the sun behind it. Ewan stood on the quay with his cap in his hands and the typed copy folded in his breast pocket, and when the boat bumped the stones he did not step aboard. He only nodded to Morag, who had walked down with the ledger under her arm, and let the spring light fall on the page he kept against his heart.
