The snow had shut the Greywether pass for nine days when Mabli Crane knocked at the gatehouse of Thorn Hollow with a sack of letters on her back and frost in her eyebrows. The gatekeeper was a broad, slow man called Hodor who had kept the bar across the road for thirty winters. He had never said more than one word to anyone, and the village had long ago stopped expecting more. He looked at her, looked at the sky, and said the word the way he always did, which meant yes, or no, or wait, depending on how he set his mouth.

She had a letter for the far side, from her brother Tam, who had gone over the pass in autumn with a red scarf and a mule and had not come back. She asked Hodor whether he had seen a man like that. "Hodor?" she said, lifting the end of the word. He shook his head slowly. Then she said the name of the mule, and he lifted the bar, and she understood that the old keeper had been listening to tone all along, and that one word could carry a whole conversation if you were patient enough to hear it.

In the morning he was gone up the track ahead of her, a lantern swinging low. By the cairn at the top, where the wind cut like wire, he had dug out a red scarf from a drift and folded it over a stone. He did not say anything when she caught up. He only held it out to her, and she knew from the way he said her name that she could take the letter to the far side herself, and that he would be waiting at the bar when she came back down.
