The lamplighter of Vell had one rule his daughter never forgot: never light the street lamps before the bell rang the dusk. Tomas broke it the winter the river froze, because the ice was singing under the bridge and the children wanted to skate by lamplight. So he climbed the iron post at the corner of Saltgate, struck his flint, and the whole town below went bright and gold, every window full of faces turning up toward him.

But the bell in the clocktower had stopped that week, and nobody had noticed that the sky above Vell was still pale green, not yet ready for night. The people of the valley had been living by the lamps so long they had forgotten the sky itself had a rhythm. Tomas stood on his ladder with the flint in his fist and felt the cold climb through his boots, understanding too late what he had done.

He climbed down before the first star came out and went to find the bellringer, an old woman named Ilse who lived above the bakery and slept with her shutters open. She was already awake. She said the dark was not the enemy of the lamps, only the reason anyone looked up. Tomas went back to Saltgate, let the flame die, and waited.

When the true night came, the lamps were dark, and the whole town stood in the square with their heads tipped back. Someone whispered that there were more stars than there had ever been. Tomas thought it was only that they had never before had the patience to see them.
