Rabbit silhouette filled with lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A rabbit standing upright on its hind legs is drawn as a solid black silhouette, with the text I must become the lion hearted girl set in white hand-drawn lettering across its body. The letters vary in size and flow along the curves of the figure, and decorative flourishes sit at the ears, feet and tail. The image is entirely black and white, with a light speckled background and a centred composition.

Brother, the hares have come down off the ridge again, and Mother says it is a sign of rain, but I think they are only hungry and do not care what the weather intends. Yesterday I watched one stand up on its hind legs at the edge of the barley, ears laid back like a pair of folded letters, and it looked at the dog as if the dog were the thing that needed explaining.

You asked in your last letter whether I am still frightened of the dark road to the mill. I am, a little, but I have started saying the words you taught me under my breath when I pass the crossroads shrine. Lion hearted, you said, is what the old soldiers at the fort call a man who would not run. I told the miller's boy that a girl may keep the same kind of heart, and he laughed until he had to sit down on the cart shaft.
He stopped laughing when the dog went after the hare and the hare did not run. It turned, stood tall in the furrow, and waited with its forepaws curled, and the dog, who has bitten two geese and a steward's son, sat down in the mud and whined. I have thought about that all week.
So I have decided. When the frost comes and the wall needs whitewashing, I will write the words on the byre lintel in letters as tall as my hand, the way the masons cut the names on the milestones. When the steward asks who did it, I will tell him the hare did, and that I only held still so it could finish. Tell Father the paint is ochre, not the red he wanted, and that I will pay for it from my own eggs.
