Rainbow faceted hexagon tattoos on two forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two people hold hands, and each forearm carries a matching hexagon made of faceted triangular sections. The shading moves through red, orange, yellow, green, teal and blue, with soft gradients inside each facet. The pale, plain background keeps the focus on the two tattoos and the joined hands.

The kiln had cooled overnight, so Nasreen was the one who lifted the seventh pane out of its rack and held it up to the north window. Dot said it was the wrong seven. She said it in the voice she saved for bad solder and late invoices, and Nasreen ignored her, because the light coming through the glass had split into six bright wedges, each a different colour, and she could not stop looking at it.

The commission was a hexagonal light for the Holloway Street chapel, which had shut its doors in March and sold its pews to a man in Harrogate. The vicar's widow wanted the window kept anyway, cut from the old colours. Every triangle had to be ground to the same angle or the whole thing would sag like a wet hat. Dot scored the lines with a diamond wheel. Nasreen ran the tongs. For three weeks they worked without a radio, passing lead came back and forth across a trestle table that smelled of flux.

On the Thursday, the seventh pane cracked along a line neither of them had scored. Dot went quiet, then put the kettle on, which meant she was thinking. Nasreen carried the cracked triangle to the bench and turned it until the fault caught the lamp, and it threw a thin blue seam across the wall, exactly the width of the gap they had been arguing about since January.

They cut a new facet from the offcut and set it by hand. When the chapel's last hymn board came down to be wrapped for the van, the two of them carried it out together, one hand each on the same corner, not talking. The window went up on the Monday. At noon the floor filled with six colours going round, and the widow stood under it with her coat still on.
