Rainbow stripe band on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A clenched fist is held towards the camera against a pale mosaic-tiled ground, with a plaid shirt sleeve covering the forearm. A band of horizontal colour stripes, including green, blue, yellow, orange and red, wraps around the wrist. The stripes appear to be solid colour with clean edges, and the simple composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

Pull that stool closer to the oven door, love, the first batch isn't out yet and the flour dust will keep your hands busy. You want the old story of the Ropewalk Strike? Then listen. In Saltcombe the dye-sheds ran five colours down the river, and every man who worked them wore a band of his shed's colour round his wrist so the foreman could tell at a glance who was owed a shilling and who was owing one.

Blue went first, then green, yellow, orange and red at the far bank where the vats boiled hottest. Old Maddock Pell stitched the bands himself from offcuts of sailcloth, and he'd not let a single one fall off without a row of stitches to hold it. The strike started on a Monday, the day the foreman cut the yellow shed's wage by a penny. Nobody walked out at first. They stood in the yard with their sleeves rolled and their wrists bare, and then they made fists, all five colours in a line, and the foreman had to count them twice.

Mind the tray, it's hot. Here's the bit that matters. Years later, when the mills were shut and the bands had rotted to rags in drawers, folk still said the strike had been won with bare wrists and not with shouting. Maddock's granddaughter kept his last band, red at one edge and faded green at the other, and she pinned it to her coat the morning the new bakery opened on the old yard, because the bread smelled better than anything the vats had ever made. Now the loaves are cooling. Eat one, then go and open the shutters.
