The mate had given up on sleep somewhere past the Fastnet, and by the third night the whole crew of the Maren Lark was living on tinned peaches and burnt coffee. Tomas Ferrie kept the middle watch alone, which suited him fine, until a small round pink creature came up the companionway holding a microphone it had filched from the ship's karaoke box. It had ears like a rabbit's, eyes the blue of a swimming pool, and the air of someone who expected the sea to behave.

It cleared its throat and began to sing. The sound was soft and sweet, like a lullaby hummed through cupped hands, and within minutes the wheel felt heavy in Tomas's grip and his eyelids weighed as much as anchors. He fought it for as long as he could. When he finally slumped against the chart table, he heard the faint squeak of a marker cap coming off.

He woke to the captain's laughter, a drawn moustache on his cheek, and rain streaking the wheelhouse glass. The storm had stalled. The creature sat on the windowsill swinging its feet and held out the microphone with a flourish. Tomas was no singer, but he had spent twenty years on boats and knew every shanty worth knowing, so he sang the one about the drowned miller's daughter, badly, and the creature clapped its little hands.

At dawn the cloud tore open over the bow and a rainbow spilled across the grey water, thick as a ribbon and dotted with hearts, stars and grinning faces the creature had flicked into the spray with one paw. The captain called it a miracle. Tomas just reached for the marker and drew a moustache on the creature, and it pretended to be furious all the way to Cork.
