Ram head with curled horns design
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised ram's head drawn in profile, with one heavy black curved horn forming a bold outline and a second horn shaded in soft grey with ridged detail. The face is rendered in greyscale with smooth gradients and dark accents around the eye and muzzle. The design sits centred on a plain white background, and its overall silhouette resembles the Aries zodiac symbol.

The rain had been coming down the length of Haddon Lane since six, and by the time the tups were penned under the market hall roof my boots were full of it. Dad never liked the wet. He said a ram that stood in water grew feet like a duck's and was no good to anyone. So he stood by the pen rails with his cap pulled low, counting the sheep twice, because he counted everything twice when he was nervous.

The big grey one was called Sergeant, though nobody could say why. Its near horn had curled round so tight it nearly touched the cheek, and the far one had a ridge down it like the rings in a sawn oak. A buyer from over the moors leaned on the rail and named a figure that made Dad go quiet. I watched the ram instead. It didn't look at the buyer. It looked up at the tin roof, where the rain drummed, as if it had worked out the weather before any of us.
We didn't sell him. Dad said the rain had got into his judgement, and he took the offer as an insult to the horn. We walked Sergeant home along the drove road with the water running off his fleece in ropes, and the lane turned to a river at the bottom field. Dad carried the gate chain over his shoulder without a word.
At the top of the field the ram stopped, shook once, and the spray flew off both horns in a bright curve. Dad laughed for the first time all day, a short cough of a laugh. The last of the light caught the bend of that horn like a hook finally set, and neither of us said a word about money after that.
