Reaching hands in a triangle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of two hands reaching towards each other, set inside a large open triangle that spans much of the forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the design reads as flat black ink. The arm is photographed against a white painted brick wall, with the tattoo placed in the left of the frame and the wrist at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit closer, and mind the peat smoke, it goes where it likes. This is the story of Ruairidh Gillies and Catriona Beag, who lived on opposite shores of the Sound of Eilean Dubh, which is only a mile across and the widest mile in the Hebrides.

He kept the ferry, a flat-bottomed boat with a tar-black hull, and she kept the post office at Ardcraig with a brass bell over the door. Every evening at the turn of the tide he rowed out to the middle, where three standing stones sit on the Sgeir like the corners of a triangle drawn by a child with a compass. He lifted his oar and she lifted her hand from the window. That was the whole courtship for eleven years. Nobody on either shore thought it strange, because the sea is a very good excuse.
Then the winter the bell cracked, Catriona sent word across with the mail boat that she would come over on the morning crossing and say what she had to say to his face. The wind got up before dawn. Ruairidh rowed out regardless, and the story says he reached the middle stone and found the water flat as a plate, and her hand already out of the mist, and his own hand going out to meet it, with the gap between their fingertips no wider than a thread. Neither of them moved again. Some say the tide turned under them. Some say they simply forgot what they were going to say.
So if you go out to the Sgeir on a still evening, you will see the three stones and the two hands drawn in the air between them, one reaching down and one reaching up. Do not try to close the gap. The crossing is the point of it, and the sea keeps them both where they can see each other.
