Realism portrait of a woman with heart-shaped hands
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A detailed portrait of a woman with blonde hair pinned up with side-swept bangs, shown from the shoulders up and looking towards the viewer. Her hands form a heart shape in front of her, with the word Home in script across the wrist area. Smooth blended shading and natural skin tones dominate, set against a soft blue background.

Come in off the step and shut that door proper, the cold has been waiting all afternoon for a gap. Now. You want the one about the lamb barn, or the one about the bell? I'll tell the barn, because the bell's only a bell.

The winter the Hollins road drifted shut, Edie Marrow was nine and out on the top field with the ewes when the sky went the colour of wet slate. Her father had sent her for the bottle lamb and she'd forgotten the way down. The snow came sideways, the sort that takes the wall and the gate and leaves you a world of white and nothing else. She sat down in the drift, the way her grandmother had told her never to, and decided she would be sensible about dying.
Down in the farmhouse her mother had gone to the back window with the paraffin lamp. She couldn't shout that far. So she wiped the flour off her hands, pressed her palms together and folded the fingers over until they made a heart against the glass, then held the lamp behind it so the shape burned out across the field. Edie saw it from the drift. A small gold heart floating in the dark, and she got up, because a mother does not hold up a heart for nothing.
That night her mother sewed a slip of paper inside the cuff of Edie's good coat, the one they never wore to market, and on it she had written one word in pencil: HOME. Edie never asked why. I reckon a light in a window is only ever a word that somebody has bothered to say with their hands. Now shut the stove door, mind your fingers on it, and go to bed.
