Realistic portrait of a woman with poppies on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A detailed portrait of a woman with a plaited braid, shown from the shoulders up, fills most of the frame. Large red poppies with green stems frame the face on either side, and a small blue flower sits within the braid. Soft blended shading gives the skin and hair depth against a yellow-orange background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The truck had been running hot since Barstow, so we pulled onto the shoulder at the first sign of red, which turned out to be a field of poppies that had no business growing out past the salt flats. Maud was standing up in the cab before I'd killed the engine. Her plait hung over one shoulder, the blue ribbon she'd tied it with gone limp in the heat, and she was already walking into the flowers with her arms out as if greeting someone she'd been expecting.

I told her the old tale, the one Dad used on tourists: the poppies put you to sleep and the road keeps going without you. She laughed and said she'd heard it from a man in a pie shop in Needles who had also sold her a map to a lake that didn't exist. I followed anyway, because the stems came up to my knees and the petals were the colour of a tail light, and because the sky behind them had gone the yellow-orange of a fuse about to catch.

We sat in the middle of it until my watch said an hour had gone. Maud didn't sleep. She picked a single bloom, pulled the ribbon loose from her plait, and wound it round the stem the way you'd tie up a parcel. Then she stood, shook the dust from her skirt, and said the field would look after the ribbon better than the road would look after us.

When we got back to the truck the engine ticked as it cooled, and I noticed the poppies had all turned their faces towards the road, the way children do when they're waiting to be called in. I drove us out with the window down. In the wing mirror the blue knot was still there, small and certain in all that red, and I didn't ask her to go back for it.
