Realistic black and tan dog with maple leaves

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small black and tan dog with large upright ears faces left, with its head filling the upper part of the design. Orange maple leaves sit across the lower edge, and a loose green watercolour wash forms the background behind the dog. Soft shading gives the fur and leaves a lifelike, photographic quality, with the palette dominated by blue-black, tan and bright orange.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Calder Hollow wanted to hear the word dog said at the Ashdown place, not since the business with the postman and the ginger tom. So when Tam Rudd came up the lane one wet October morning with a black and tan pup buttoned inside his coat, the whole green stopped to watch. The pup was no bigger than a loaf, with ears too large for the rest of it, and it looked out at the village with the wary dignity of a creature who had been promised a better class of household.

The pup was called Sooty, though nobody could agree on who had named him. He took no notice of the rules. Each morning he trotted down to the old maple by the mill, the one Gideon Marsh had planted the spring before he sailed for Halifax and never came back from, and he tumbled through whatever leaves had fallen in the night. Then he carried one, always the reddest, across the green to the empty cottage and laid it on the step, as neatly as a clerk filing a receipt.

Tam tried to stop him. The vicar tried to stop him. Mrs Ashdown, who had sworn on the family Bible that no creature would cross her threshold, found herself sweeping a small drift of orange from her own doorstep every day and not complaining about it. By the second week of November there were forty leaves stacked on the cottage step, curling at the edges, and a stranger's car idling at the top of the lane with its engine off.

Sooty climbed onto the pile and sat in the middle of it, ears up, facing the lane. The stranger got out, looked at the leaves for a long while, and then at the dog. Something in her face gave way. Nobody in the village ever learned who she was, only that she knelt down and said Gideon's name to the pup as if it were a question, and the maple let go of its last leaf onto his head.
