Those are radiator fins, my grandmother always said, and the Sphynx were bred for the Ring Station because nothing on a hairless animal sheds into the air filters. Hairless, mark you, not bald for vanity.

Her name was Mab, and she had a dark patch across her face as if someone had pressed a thumb of soot there and thought better of it. The engineers said it was the only colour that survived the ageing vats. Her eyes were blue, pale as frost on the observation glass. When the hull groaned at night she'd sit on the cold rail and stare into the dark as though she had ordered it to keep still.

One winter the water reclamation failed on the lower decks, and the children were moved up the spine to the dry bays. Mab walked the whole route ahead of them, tail up, stopping at every hatch to wait. Nobody asked her to. She was never wrong about a leak. When the last family reached the warm bay, she sat down in front of the sealed door and looked back down the corridor with those blue eyes, as if to say the rest of you had better hurry.

So when you're grown and someone tells you a cat can't be a hero, you tell them about Mab. Now, who wants the next one, about the pump that talked?
