Realistic tattoo of a cat with blue eyes and long whiskers on a forearm, with a wing shape above it in a realistic style.

Realistic cat portrait on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A realistic portrait of a dark-furred cat with pale blue eyes fills the forearm, with fine whiskers and soft shading across the face. The fur is rendered in greys and black, with the blue eyes as the main colour accent. A wing or feather shape sits above the cat, partly cut off by the top of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The cat came out of the beech wood the week after the big frost, and she has not once looked at me the way a cat looks at something it means to eat. Mrs Pargeter says she is a Siamese from the Hallam house, which would explain the blue eyes, though nobody in the village has seen a Hallam since the war. She sits on the stile at the forest edge each dusk, facing the trees, as if she is waiting for someone to come back through them.

Last Thursday I followed her in. Past the charcoal burners' hut the path goes soft with moss, and the birches stand so close their trunks look like bars. She went ahead of me without a sound, tail straight up, and stopped under the old oak where the owl sits. There was a feather on the path, long and banded grey, and when I bent for it she turned her head and looked at me with those pale eyes until I felt foolish for having come at all.

I brought the feather home. Mother says it is bad luck to keep a thing from the wild, so I pinned it above the dresser, and the cat now sleeps on the sill beneath it every night. This morning the feather was gone, and in its place the sill was wet with frost and a single dark whisker lay on the glass, curled like a question.

I have not told Father. I think you would know what to do, though I suppose you would only laugh and say I am turning into one of those village women who talk to the animals. Write soon. Tell me the sea is as grey as they say.

Love, Nell
