Realistic black cat portrait on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A realistic portrait of a black cat turned in profile, with striped fur shaded in soft black and grey tones. The eyes are rendered in bright teal with highlights, giving the image its only strong colour. The tattoo sits on a calf and is framed against a plain skin background with a blurred floor behind.

Our tom came to the back door at half five with coal dust on his whiskers, same as every morning, and sat on the step as if he had an appointment. My mother said he was waiting for the milk. He was waiting for my father, who was lacing his boots by the range and pretending not to notice.

Nobody in Hollin Row kept a cat that wasn't useful or pretty, and Soot was both. He had a way of turning his head when he wanted you to look at something, left shoulder to the room, eyes like sea glass held up to the sun. The old men said he'd been born in the lamp house and had never once been afraid of the dark.
Dad went to the cage at six. Soot walked him as far as the gate, then sat down in the middle of the road and would not move, not for a saucer of fish, not for me calling him by his name. My mother came out in her apron and stood beside me, and we watched the lamps bob away up the hill towards the headgear.
The fall came at ten past eight. Dad was home by dinner with a bandaged hand and a face the colour of ash, and he said nothing about how he'd come to be clear of the cut when the roof went. Soot was waiting on the step. He looked at Dad a long while, then climbed into his lap and began to purr like a kettle coming up to the boil.
