Realistic dog portrait in a gold frame with roses

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A collage with a photo of a dark grey dog wearing a studded collar, beside two close-ups of a tattoo of the same dog. The tattoo shows a shaded, realistic portrait of the dog inside an ornate gold frame, with red roses and green leaves around the edges. The grey shading is smooth and detailed, while the frame and flowers use bold, saturated colour.

Dear Ruth,

The roses on the south wall have finally come into flower, which I know you will say is no thanks to me, since I never pruned them the way Dad showed us. Bramble has taken to lying under them in the afternoons, flat on the warm bricks with her chin on her paws, watching the gate as if the postman owes her money.

I found the photograph of her in the bureau drawer while looking for the gas bill. Mum had it cut to fit the little oval frame with the gilt curls at the corners, the one that used to hold Gran's wedding picture in the hall. I didn't know she'd swapped them. Gran is in the cupboard under the stairs now, face to the wall, and I'm not sure whether that's an insult or a kindness to her.

Yesterday Bramble dug a hole under the fence by the compost, right beside the pink Albertine, and came up with a shoe. Not one of mine. A child's red wellington, full of earth and a snail the size of a thumb. I sat on the path and laughed until I had to hold the handle of the spade. There was a name written inside the top in biro, Tomasz, so I've put it on the windowsill in case anyone comes asking.

I'm enclosing a cutting from the rambler, rooted in a jam jar. Plant it where the hole is. It'll want the sun and not much fussing. Write back and tell me you'll come at Easter, and bring the good secateurs you took last time. Love, Jo

P.S. Bramble sends her regards to the shoe.
